Welcome to the Mediterranean Society Of Coloproctology

Founded in Rome in 1998

Dear colleagues and dear friends,

It is more than a year now that [the one and only] Professor Ahmed Shafik, the Honorary President of the Mediterranean Society of Pelvic Floor Diseases and Founder of shafikthe Ahmed Shafik Foundation for Science, was called off from the middle of his busy life. For us, remaining behind meant to dig ways through the interknitted web of his research work and trace the carved outlines of his mapped visions. Indeed, not an easy but a very honorable and rewarding mission to be dealing with the unbounded heritage of a scientific legend like Ahmed Shafik.

One of his pre-eminent concerns was to share with the medical community the results of his research in the sequence they appeared, be it by publishing, making presentations in congresses, or holding seminars.  We are proud that we succeeded in keeping this tradition alive:  our monthly seminars continued without interruption and were met with abundance of positive feedback from all walks of the medical community.  Along these lines, we are heading towards the 7th Annual Congress of the Mediterranean Society of Pelvic Floor Disorders, to be held at the international Cairo conference center in Cairo from April 9th through 11th, 2009.  With coloproctology being an essential pillar in pelvic floor issues, we are pleased to announce that the Rome based Mediterranean Society of Coloproctology will, as in previous years, contribute their specialized input to our event. In fact, the concerted efforts of both societies have reflected in the progressing understanding of the basic mechanisms, diagnoses and methods of treatment of disorders in the pelvic floor.  And in addition, the Ahmed Shafik Foundation for Science will host best abstract award for 2000 euros.

With these events in view, we have the great pleasure to cordially invite you and your colleagues to attend our convention. We would like to emphasize that the success of our Meeting lies in your enthusiasm, in your work and in your willingness to share your best and most recent results with your fellow physicians. As usually, we will have the opportunity to discuss the latest discoveries and achievements with the most prolific international guests and also share novel or controversial experiences with our renowned national speakers.  Our organizing committee is making dedicated efforts to finalize a very appealing scientific program that promises a large number of interesting highlights and will provide the right mix of academic and clinical topics around the unifying complexity of the pelvic floor.

For those participants who will be coming to Cairo for the first time:   be prepared to live through a few exciting days in an extremely unconventional cosmopolitan city with an incredible history.  You will meet the witnesses of the vast pharaonic dynasties like the pyramids and the sphinx, or enjoy the citadel and the Cairo Tower as monuments of modern times, or admire the beautiful artwork in mosques, churches and synagogues, and finally ask yourself what you could have done to make your way through the Egyptian multi-cultural museum to the end….

I am looking forward to welcoming you in Cairo for the Congress.
Very sincerely,

Ali A. Shafik, MD
Professor of Surgery

President, Mediterranean Society of Coloproctology
